I certainly am not talking about the players. I am strictly speaking of the rules of the NFL and the people behind those rules. I understand the concern for player safety, but I believe the NFL officials have taken their control too far, but at other times look the other way.
For the past couple of years, there is an increase of penalties for hard hits. The officials have too much responsibility to player safety that they take out the parts of the game that make it worth watching. This year there have been a number of penalties for hitting an offensive player too high. Not all of the penalties are correct as the instant replay shows the defender leading with his shoulder correctly. These are the hits that make it exciting to root for defenses.
The other stupid new penalty is when the receiver catches the ball and is immediately hit by a defender. This should not be called a foul as it was trained as good play. This is what the receivers know could happen to them on any given play. This is why they get paid the big bucks. The offensive and defensive play should result in excitement.
But what about the large number of hits that happen after a player goes to the ground? They only get called when certain offensive players slide, but not equal throughout all games. It is really frustrating for fans to watch the NFL officials call a game one way, but a different way in another game. So I have a solution…
ALLOW CHALLENGES FOR ALL FLAGS! Yes, it might slow the game up a little bit, but at least it should bring about better calls and less frustration for everyone in the world. lol
The only problem with that would be holding could be called every play. Unfortunately, holding doesn’t get called enough between corner backs and receivers. Overall, allowing the coaches 1 penalty challenge per game would help improve play and officiating. A coach may challenge for a penalty that was not called or against one that is called. If that coach wins, he is granted another penalty challenge. If he loses, the team is penalized a time out, but the number of time outs should be increased from 3 to 4. That will bring more excitement for the end of the game when one team is running out the clock for them to get an additional first down.
Why don’t they have penalties for when the offensive player gets wide open or causes the defender to trip over their own ankles? That is what we watch the game for along with excellent defensive play!
