Importance of Playoff Experience in Sports

Especially in the NBA, but also in NFL and MLB, announcers will downplay a team due to playoff experience when they are playing an "experienced" team at the end of the season. Experienced teams would include the Lakers, Celtics, Patriots, the football Giants, Yankees and the Red Sox. If your team was not mentioned in the last sentence it is thought by announcers that the team has a lack of Playoff Experience when playing an experienced team.

It is stupid to infer that one team would have an advantage due to playoff experience. They all get paid a large amount of money to play the same game in front of millions of people. Basketball, football or baseball still play the same game in the playoffs. The team with the higher score wins. The same aspects that got a team into the playoffs are the same things that are required to win in the playoffs.

Each game has not changed that much over time. If you were to put together a team that included Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, they would have the most experience over any 2 teams put together that are currently playing. There is no way that team would compete with today's Miami Heat, Oklahoma Thunder or even the Sacramento Kings due to the higher level of athleticism of today's player versus the deterioration of retired players.

I wish the announcers would just shut up when they talk about playoff experience. But if they didn’t say all of the stupid stuff they say, we wouldn't hear much when watching games.
