Confessions from an #Uber Driver #2

Q: I would imagine you have to drive a bunch of drunks home all of the time?

A: No, I guess I would if I only worked late night.

Q: Do you get a lot of riders that you don't like?

A: No, for the most part everyone is nice and respectable like you.

Q: What is the worst experience that you have given a ride?

A: One night, not too far from my home, I had a ride request and sat outside their house for 8 minutes before they came out. One person sat upfront and 3 people in the back when a 4th squeezed in. I told them I am only able to take 4 people total. He said "We won't tell if you won't." I told them "Alright, just take care of me with a tip."

I drove them downtown. As we are getting on the expressway, the guy in the front seat opens a can of beer and starts drinking it. Further down the expressway the 5th guy is holding a can in view of my back window. I said "What's in that can?" He said "What can?" and then tries to conceal it behind another rider.

Apparently they don't tip in Boston which was where they were from. New York people are the best, but Boston are not. They got out of my car and did not give me a tip. They were very disrespectful by making me wait too long, squeezing an extra person in the car, concealing alcohol and drinking it in the car and then did not tip.

Q: Do you expect to be tipped?

A: Uber wants the transaction to be cashless. They want the riders not to feel obligated to tip, but they say that driver's should not refuse the tip after explaining the policy because we earned it. I don't expect a tip on every ride, but when someone makes a request out of the norm, I get there faster than expected, or I had to drive further to pick them up than the actual trip, I do expect a tip. I have a nice car that is practically brand new and I offer my riders a cell phone charger as soon as they get in the car. I have multiple chargers for Android and iPhones including the iPhone 5. I do my best to make the experience enjoyable including changing the satellite radio to their favorite music.
