President Obama’s plan for health insurance for all is noble, but I believe it could be better. In his plan, he wants to penalize individuals who do not have health insurance. This does not make sense especially given the state of the economy with a lack of discretionary income for lower and middle class America.
A solution that would work is require employers with more than 10 employees, self employed included, have group health insurance and pay half the premium or get penalized in the $100/month per employee or $50/month for self employed employees. Now this would not be fair for start up companies, but should be established for companies who have been in business for 3+ years.
This would help prevent self-employed individuals like realtors, financial advisors and lawn workers from being discriminated against with the penalty for not having health insurance because they do not work for an employer who provides it. This will also help those employees who get paid income by 1099 even though the employer knows that employee is an employee and not self employed working for them.
And that’s my fix. Tell me what you would fix.
