Samsung Droid Charge running Gingerbread

Being a owner of the Samsung Droid Charge, I am always looking for the time when we get an upgrade to Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. Last week I learned that HTC was upgrading the Thunderbolt and Incredible for Verizon this month. I am sure the same is coming for the Droid Charge very soon although Samsung and Verizon are very quiet on the matter.

Two days ago I learned of the newest leaked upgrade for the Droid Charge, EP1W. Apparently it has been working fine for the past month according to different Android Forums. But some users are experiencing problems with their phones locking up and are forced to pull the battery. This new EP1W rom also only comes rooted. Many users like this, but if Verizon were to find you rooted your phone, they would void the warrantee. I find this is too risky when we are so close to getting an official OTA upgrade to Gingerbread. This upgrade also probably won’t wipe your phone clean when installed if it is anything like past upgrades.

One of the upgrades with EP1W is to the modem. Driving through Orlando Florida, I have found that I lose 4G coverage many times during the day for hours at a time. In the forum where they list the new leaked roms, they also share a modem upgrade to resolve the loss of 4G. I decided it was worthwhile to download and see if it fixes my 4G coverage. Driving through Orlando today, I never lost 4G coverage and found that I had almost full strength most of the day.

Hopefully Samsung and Verizon will upgrade us to Gingerbread very soon so we are not that far behind the new Motorola Droid Bionic.
