With all of the drama surrounding the ownership divorce situation, this season appeared to be lost for the Lost Angeles Dodgers. The news was really bad that the team would not make their payroll at the beginning of the season.
Ever since my favorite Dodger catcher, Mike Scioscia, started managing the Angels, they appeared to be the best baseball team in LA.The Dodgers to have 2 players playing extremely well this season. Center fielder Matt Kemp is having a MVP like year which is remarkable since he hasn’t had a powerful bat in the lineup behind him all year. Andre Ethier is the other consistent hitter in the lineup, but he bats before Matt Kemp. Apparently pitchers have pitched around Ethier taking their chances with Kemp and Kemp has took advantage of it.
The other player with a remarkable season is starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw is leading the league in strikeouts and has 17 wins this season. Kershaw is in the running for MVP for pitcher, the Cy Young award. It is going to be tough with Cliff Lee making a run for Dodger great Orel Hershiser’s scoreless 59 inning streak in 1988. Maybe the vote will be split this year.
Despite the remarkable performances by Kemp and Kershaw, the Dodgers will not make the playoffs if the season were to end today. Kemp believes that despite being below .500 and almost 10 games out of first, they have a chance. We have seen crazy things happen before at the end of the year like when the Red Socks were down 3 games in their division series to win the last 4. That was the first time ever a baseball team down 0-3 games in a playoff series came back to win the series. Maybe there is hope.
On the other hand, their may not be that much hope that both of these players with MVP and Cy Young this season when their teams will not make the playoffs. Cliff Lee’s Philadelphia Phillies are leading the National League in wins.
Go Dodgers!
