I welcomed the Windows 8.1 update as it meant my computer starting in desktop mode rather than the metro start screen. I bought my computer last September with the belief that computers are not advancing that much more than this one. It is a 27" Samsung touchscreen All in One with an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB hard drive. This computer sold for over $1800 when it was first introduced a year earlier. I got it for half of that. I should never have a problem with it as long as I am nice to it and don't abuse it.
I noticed that Chrome was not working properly as sometimes it would freeze up when I wasn't using it for more than 5 minutes. This should not be the case as my computer it the top of the line. It drove me crazy as I tried several different ways of restoring the computer. I deleted programs that I wasn't using and disabled start up programs, but Chrome continued to freeze.
Finally I decided that I have not done a complete restore and I had done that with past computers and they would run much faster. I keep all of the data with the exception of the download folder on my external hard drive, so it should not be an issue with restoring things back to normal. Unfortunately when you do a complete wipe of the system, it restores Windows back to the original configuration that came with the computer with was Windows 8. Therefore I would have to wait for several updates including Samsung hardware updates to be completed before I could ever go back to Windows 8.1.
By midnight that Sunday night I was done and I was about to install Firefox when the worst thing happened. The Firefox that I downloaded was not from Mozilla directly, but through another website that came up in the search and due to being tired I kept clicking next. Before I know it I had installed a registry cleaner, search bar assistant and some other spy software. This stuff is so bad that it disables your restore functions. I was so mad that I almost abused my computer, but took it out on the desk. Thankfully it did not break and land on my foot.
I decided that I waited this long, I might as well do it over again and make it right. I restored the computer back to the original configuration and let it run over night. I woke up and it wasn't much further than where I left it. My parents came over that morning to help me with a home project and I was getting the computer to run at the same time. A couple of hours after they left I was close to being done. The next problem occurred... my touchscreen was not working. There was a device, the touchscreen, that was not recognized in the Device Manager.
I utilized the Samsung software for support and let a technician into my computer to find the driver for it. Nothing was working. I search and found others had the same problem and solved it by holding the power button to turn the computer off and then turn it on again. But still tired, I was not thinking straight and decided to restore the computer again to try to fix it. After waiting another couple of hours, the touchscreen still wasn't working. I then held the power button to turn the computer off and finally it worked when I turned it back on.
The next problem was the Windows 8 updates were not downloading and installing. I then decided that my computer was nothing more than a expensive Chromebox since all I use is Chrome and it shouldn't matter whether I have Windows 8 or 8.1 installed on it. Then the updates installed and everything was working great again and faster than ever, but Chrome would still freeze from time to time.
I ran across an article on my phone in Google Play Newstand that suggested making your mobile Chrome browser faster by changing the RAM allocated to it from Default to the max of 512 MB. Chrome was faster, but it still froze. Finally I did a search again, something that I had done weeks ago without an answer, but this time I got a very good one. I did what it said and went into the properties of the Chrome shortcut and checked the compatibility. Windows determined that Chrome was Windows 8 compatible and was able to fix it for me. Chrome is running the fastest ever with no more lags. I still have not heard back from Google when I wrote them about it. I most likely will not change my computer for a Chromebox now.
