In the past, I found it funny that when a new phone was released accessories were immediately available for it that fit it perfectly. Recently it was announced that Starbucks will start rolling out wireless charging spots that your probably won't use. They were referring to Android users as the Qi wireless charging system is all that is known to the few Android users who have adopted it. Qi was introduced with the Samsung Galaxy S3 if you purchased a wireless charging back cover for it.
It was very frustrating that you purchase a new top of the line device only to find that it has something missing. Wireless charging was meant to be faster than the traditional charging cable, but the problem came with all of the different types of charging bases. There are many shapes and sizes and unfortunately it is difficult to find the sweet spot to charge your phone and keep it there.
This all was to change with the Nexus charging base for the new Nexus 7 and the Nexus 5 phone. Google's Nexus charging base held a magnetic attraction to your device to maintain a stable charging connection. It is so good that you can only buy it through Google's Play Store. Due to the limited availability, it appears that LG is the only phone manufacturer to have wireless charging built in to there phones.
Since LG devices are the only phones that come with wireless charging built in, it would appear that they have a special patent that Samsung and Motorola are keeping away from. But if that is so, why does Samsung make their devices capable with the purchase of an additional back cover? It could be that Samsung feels that they have built enough brand loyalty that they don't need to include a little piece of metal in their back covers to make the wireless charging possible.
Samsung, LG and Motorola make up the majority of the Android cell phone market, but Apple is the only maker of the iPhone. Despite the iPhone losing smart phone market share, it is still the only iPhone. Eventually Apple will improve the iPhone to have the same capabilities of Android, but somethings Apple will try to jump ahead of Google and wireless charging appears to be one of them. Starbucks is installing PMA wireless charging spots in their stores which is a guarantee that the next iPhone will have PMA wireless charging built in. That should be an improvement over their most recent charging cable change with the iPhone 5.
