Is Prince Fielder Worth That Much?

I heard on Sports Center today that Prince Fielder says this is probably his last year with the Milwaukee Brewers. I was amazed when they said he should be able to get $17 million a year with his next contract. That is $17 million! I thought you could buy a professional team for that kind of money about 20 years ago. You probably could still get one for that as owners would try to escape the heavy payrolls.

Where is the cap? Seeing that kind of money going out for one player, you can see why smaller market teams are losing their best players in free agency to New York, Boston and Los Angeles. Maybe we can shorten that to just New York and Boston as the Dodgers are going to be suffering with some of their big names being lost to free agency this off season because they lack stability from ownership. That might have been unfair to leave the Angels, my second favorite California baseball team, out of that list.

The Angels have always been known for excellent starting pitching with some quality players who are past their prime. At least that is the way they were in the 80's and similar to the way they are now. I doubt they will put the money up for a player in the prime of their career like Prince Fielder or Matt Kemp.

This big players go to the teams that can pay them and it appears to separate further the good teams from the never good teams. This is far different from the NFL as when ever you start a season, you can't pick winners based on last years teams. Coaching changes, free agency and draft picks play a more equal mix than in any other sport. The NBA is the closest to the NFL when it comes to the right combination to win. We just need something to happen for Major League Baseball to have similar traits or the Chicago Cubs might not win a World Series for another 100 years!
