I remember months ago reading someone posted that the Samsung Droid Charge might get skipped being updated to Gingerbread and thinking the person was a little far fetched expecting Ice Cream Sandwich update instead. Whether it is days or weeks from the release, but the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is coming out with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Many other phones are getting updated to Gingerbread, so why not the Samsung Droid Charge?
It does make sense that the Samsung Droid Charge could get Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Apple is making a push to get their devices on the same operating system on all devices. Microsoft is coming out with Windows 8 that will be designed to operate a number of devices including computers, cell phones and tablets. Microsoft might be late to the game, but that hasn't stopped them trying in the past.
The problem Microsoft had in the past is similar to what Google is going through with Android. Android is a phenomenal operating system, but it is used on many different devices from different manufacturers with similar parts. Big difference is Microsoft phones sucked as programs didn't work on every phone and they couldn't do basic functions you would expect like cut and paste.
The one thing that Microsoft did well was upgrading computer operating systems with a disc. No matter what kind of computer, as long as it was running a version of Windows, you could upgrade it to a newer version. Android Ice Cream Sandwich might not be that one yet, but we have no reason to believe that it is not.
Ice Cream Sandwich will appear on the next phones and tablets, so why not older devices for a fee? Nobody has mentioned a fee before and it is doubtful there ever will be a fee to use Android as Google sells advertisement. But Google has the largest market share and the ability to keep it as Microsoft may get back in the game by stealing market share from Apple. The only way for Apple to avoid it is to give consumers more of what they want: lower priced devices that are insurable. Or at least one of those.
The price for devices have increased initially for Android phones such as the Samsung Droid Charge for $299. But less than 6 months later they are selling for under $100. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be the same and all devices will be on a unified Ice Cream Sandwich including the Droid Charge.
