Tim Tebow–Defying Critics

Tim_Tebow_BroncosThe Denver Broncos started Tim Tebow last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. I wanted to write this blog before the game to give my prediction, but the timing really doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because even though Tebow lead his team to victory in overtime, the critics still say he can’t throw the ball. They also say that his style is not made for the NFL.

The same critics still say that Michael Vick doesn’t have what it takes. Those same critics have calmed down since Vick beat everyone out for the starting job and wins. He hasn’t had the success that they expected at the beginning of the season, but it hasn’t been all of his fault. Vick has suffered from a lack of blocking from his offensive linemen and the Eagles defense hasn’t stopped anyone this season. But then again, he is only one player out of 22 position players on a team that are responsible for the teams performance along with the coach.

Tim Tebow happens to play the same position as Michael Vick and therefore is only one player out of his team’s 22 position players. The big difference between the 2 is Tim Tebow is the size of tight ends and is as elusive as Michael Vick. Tebow’s speed is not quite like Vick’s, but you have to wrap up a tackle to bring him down or he will spin out of it.

Tebow has more than running and spinning in his arsenal. He did lead the Florida Gators to 2 National Collegiate Football Titles which means he played quarterback. He had targets to throw to at Florida as they have shown up in the NFL also. But the critics still say that he isn’t accurate and his throwing motion is not good.

Poor throwing motion did not hold back Vinnie Testiverde who lead the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Cleveland Browns for a number of years. Vinnie’s throwing motion did not look good with his near-submarine throwing motion. At least Vinnie had a throwing motion because if you notice Phillip Rivers for the Chargers will shot put the ball many times and has a similar throwing motion as Vinnie had. So is throwing motion such a big deal?

Donovan McNabb has a good throwing motion, but it doesn’t matter when he throws the ball at the feet of his receivers. I was surprised that it took Philadelphia so long to replace him. It doesn’t matter what it looks like as long as it gets the job done. Therefore Tim Tebow’s throwing motion is not a big deal especially since he does get the job done. Where Tebow doesn’t get the job done is the quick passes that require a little loft on the ball with accuracy. Tebow has a tendency of overshooting his target as he gets a little to anxious. That is not that big of a deal and can be worked on. He does have a cannon for an arm and that cannot be taught!

Tebow lead his Denver Broncos to victory last Sunday due to his great skill sets. He ran the ball when he had to, he ran to avoid being sacked and gave his receivers more time to get open, and he put the ball in the receiver’s hands when it counted. The best part was that he accomplished it all without turning the ball over. Cam Newton plays similarly, it’s his first season in the league, but nobody is talking about that he can’t get the job done since he is averaging 300 yards passing a game. What about his 3.4 turnover average per game?

The comparison between Tebow and Newton reminds me of playing golf with my dad. Long and all over the place is not as good as a little short but extremely accurate. It is just too bad that the Broncos traded away his best receiver before his start which is like taking your pitching wedge out of the bag and expecting you to hit the same shot with your 3 iron. It can be done, but it is not easy!

Tebow has so much charisma that make it hard not to root for the guy. His skill need a little refining, but nobody was born a NFL quarterback. Heisman trophies don’t entitle you to success. With a revived defense, the Broncos will have success this season with Tebow leading the way. I expect them to make the playoffs and probably win their division. It is early in the season and nobody else in the AFC West has shown more than a glimpse of good play, so their division will be won in the second half of the season.
